The SWTaskAddIn and the associated Convert and Print tasks are not automatically upgraded by the SOLIDWORKS PDM Installer during a version upgrade. The reason is that these Add-ins and tasks are customisable. It would be very difficult to automatically and reliably update them without risking losing this customisation. If you have customised any Task, or written your own, it is recommended to copy the entire Task script (to Notepad++ or similar) before upgrading.
If the SWTaskAddIn and Tasks are not upgraded with the version of SOLIDWORKS PDM, it can result in loss of functionality such as: some files failing to convert, missing annotations, dimensioning being generated incorrectly in a PDF file or a blank drawing sheet being created etc.
You can check the version of the Task Add-in via PDM Administration. The image below shows the SWTaskAddIn for Intercad_Vault is at 2016 sp3. Notice also the Dispatch Add-in has been upgraded to 2017 sp0.
– The version will show in a numerical form YYYYSSBBBB, for example: 2016030064
- YYYY – Major version (e.g. 2016)
- SS – Service pack (e.g. 03 = SP3)
- BBBB – Build number (e.g.64)
To upgrade the existing Task Add-in in the vault:
- Open the PDM Administration tool on an upgraded (current) client and log in to the file vault as an Administrator.
- File > Open > Browse to C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS PDM\default data\
- Load the “Convert_GB.cex” file
- Drag-and-drop ONLY the SWTaskAddIn to the Add-ins node (do not import the actual Convert Task)
- Select Yes to update the existing Add-in
- Check the Add-in has updated:
- Click the PDM icon in the System tray and select Task Host Configuration
- Ensure the updated Add-in is loaded
- On clients that act as Task host it is recommended to exit PDM and log in again to the view to ensure the updated Add-in is loaded.
